Cutter Soil Mix Walls (CSM)

Cutter Soil Mixing is a process of mixing a cementitious grout with in-situ soils utilizing sets of counter rotating wheels on a Kelly bar system.  This process allows for construction of rectangular panels eliminating the necessity of grinding or shotcreting the resulting scalloped shape of a secant wall.  The compressive strength of the soil mix wall can increase with increasing injection rate and cement content in the grout.  These panels are installed in a sequence where every other panel is installed and then filled in between once the first panels are allowed to cure.  The panels can extend to depths up to 100-ft and can provide a socket into bedrock for a water cutoff.  They are often constructed to provide an impermeable support of excavation wall or a below grade barrier to prevent groundwater flow.  Steel beams are placed in the panels when wet and provide lateral support when used for a support of excavation system.
